Boom Lift is a common lifting equipment in higher height aerial working platform solutions between Telescopic Boom Lift & Articulated Boom Lift, mainly composed of the following parts:

  • Lifting mechanism: including electric motor, reducer, brake, wire rope, pulley, etc., used for lifting and lowering goods.
  • Rotary mechanism: composed of electric motor, reducer, rotary support, rotary gear ring, etc., used to achieve the rotation of the arm equipment.
  • Arm frame: composed of the main beam of the arm frame, the auxiliary beam of the arm frame, the arm frame bracket, the arm frame hydraulic cylinder, etc., used to support and adjust the working arm of the arm equipment.
  • Walking mechanism: composed of electric motor, reducer, walking wheel, walking track, etc., used to achieve the walking of the arm equipment.
  • Control system: including the main controller, operating console, remote control, etc., used to control the various actions of the boom.

The above are the main components of the boom. The different models and uses of the boom may vary, but the overall structure and composition are similar. The performance and quality of the boom depend on the design and manufacturing quality of each part.

Therefore, when purchasing and using the boom, it is necessary to pay attention to selecting the appropriate model and brand, and carry out regular maintenance and repair to ensure its safe and reliable operation.

There are two types of boom lifts popular in the market,  Articulated and Telescopic. They are both safe for indoor and outdoor jobs.

Telescopic Boom Lift

A telescopic boom is a multifunctional machinery mainly used for lifting, handling, stacking, transportation and other operations. It can complete various tasks that conventional forklifts and cranes cannot complete. According to their different functions and properties, straight-arm vehicles are mainly divided into four categories: agricultural, industrial, mining, and construction.

Articulated Boom Lift

Articulating boom lifts are aerial machines used to access difficult-to-reach locations. Most models come with a 360-degree base turntable, so they can swivel in any direction. However, the most notable feature that sets them apart is their joint arm and segmented boom sections.

A boom lift is a type of aerial lift designed to lift workers on construction sites, on farms, along utility lines, and elsewhere. It consists of a platform or bucket attached to a hydraulic arm and a grounded, movable base.

The main difference between the Telescopic Boom Lift & Articulated Boom Lift lies in the number and length of arms, working height, working radius, and working field.

The number and length of arms:

A Telescopic Boom Lift usually only has one telescopic arm, while an Articulated Boom Lift has two telescopic arms that can be changed in length to accommodate different operating heights.
Homework height: Because the Telescopic Boom Lift only has one telescopic arm, its homework height is relatively high, usually reaching a range of 12 to 56 meters, even 70 meters. The working height of the Articulated Boom Lift is relatively low, usually between 6 meters and over 40 meters.

Working radius:

The Telescopic Boom Lift has a larger working radius and can be operated in different positions. The working radius of the Articulated Boom Lift is relatively small, and it can only operate within a certain range.

Applicable fields:

Telescopic Boom Lift & Articulated Boom Lift are suitable for different fields. Telescopic Boom Lift is more suitable for high-altitude operations such as tall buildings and bridges, while Articulated Boom Lift is more suitable for high-altitude operations such as low buildings and gardens, and can also be used for operations in narrow spaces.

Price and maintenance costs:

The price of a Telescopic Boom Lift is higher, while the price of the Articulated Boom Lift is relatively lower. In addition, the maintenance cost of the Articulated Boom Lift is also relatively low because of its relatively simple structure.

Function and application scenarios:

The Articulated Boom Lift is suitable for short distances, low height restrictions, and higher requirements, such as urban construction, road construction, waste cleaning, etc; The Telescopic Boom Lift is suitable for operations with large spans, higher height restrictions, and the need for greater excavation depth, such as large-scale infrastructure construction and rural land improvement.

Improving speed and working environment:

Due to inherent factors in its multi arm extension design, the lifting speed of the Articulated Boom is slower than that of the Telescopic Boom. Telescopic Boom Lift are more suitable for outdoor environments that require efficiency and reliability, such as shipyards. The Articulated Boom Lift can replace the Telescopic Boom Lift on a large indoor range, but if it is on the ground with light load-bearing capacity, the Articulated Boom Lift high-altitude work vehicle is generally chosen.

Boom lifts move horizontally and vertically, whereas scissor lifts can only move up and down. While boom lifts attain a greater vertical reach, scissor lifts have larger platforms with higher weight capacities, enabling them to carry multiple people along with loads of material.

Steps for operating a boom lift

  1. Find a big area around the base and circumference of the boom lift to prevent any tools or falling objects from landing on crew members and personnel. The boom lift circumference is often quite large and should be roped off or caution taped to keep the area clear.
  2. The workers must be well trained to operate the type of boom lift being used. It’s important that lift operators have current certifications and know how to operate a boom lift properly, and they should demonstrate this knowledge before beginning any work.
  3. Wear your safety harness if you’re the one getting into the bucket. Make sure that the fall arrest system and safety lanyard are in place and secured to the bucket before allowing the operator to raise you. A strong gust of wind or a bump from another piece of equipment could knock you off the platform.
  4. Don’t exceed the weight capacity for your boom lift. All boom lifts are rated for a certain load maximum. Exceeding the maximum rated load for your boom lift can make the equipment top-heavy and cause it to tip over. The boom lift should never be used for lifting heavy objects.
  5. Operate it in a good weather when operating a boom lift. High wind is a serious safety concern when operating a boom lift. Every boom lift has weight and weather restrictions. Part of how to operate a boom lift safely involves following the wind restrictions found in the user manual.
  6. Don’t climb outside the basket or sit on the outer edges. When using a boom lift, be sure to stay in the basket at all times and only climb in/out of the basket when in the load position. It’s easy to understand the impulse to over-extend for something just out of reach instead of lowering and moving the boom lift. Doing this, however, poses a significant risk of falling.
  7. Operate from a strong base and ensure the boom lift is stable before raising the boom arm. Park the vehicle on stable, level ground to ensure the safety of the operator and surrounding personnel.
  8. Lower and retract the boom before moving the lift. This is our final safety tip for using a boom lift safely; make sure the boom is retracted and down before moving the lift.

The Jib on the boom lift is the final transmission and load-bearing part of the force. The absolute force of the jib must be strong enough to maintain the stability of the high-altitude work vehicle. This can ensure that the work equipment does not shake or tilt during high-altitude operations, thereby ensuring the safety of workers and the accuracy of operations.

High-altitude work equipment is a specialized vehicle used to transport workers and equipment to designated sites for various operations. This type of equipment has high maneuverability and can quickly transfer and cover a wide area. Due to its convenience and flexibility, aerial work platforms are widely used in communication, municipal construction, fire rescue, building decoration, aerial photography, as well as shipbuilding, petroleum, chemical, aviation and other industries.

We use sea shipping to transport the boom lift due to its large size.
